Winter Bean Varieties

Vespa

✚ High yielding, stiff strawed variety.

✚ Treated Yield 111%

✚ Vespa is a consistently high yielding variety which sits at the top of the PGRO Descriptive list.

✚ It yields considerably more (17%) than its predecessor Tundra.

✚ It is of average maturity and has robust disease resistance.

✚ Vespa has good seed size, slightly larger than Tundra and has strong standing ability at harvest.

Breeder: Senova UK

Vincent

✚ New Variety with high treated yield 108%

✚ Vincent yields just 3% behind Vespa.

✚ Vincent has a good standing ability at harvest and has an average maturity score, alongside Vespa.

✚ It has the best resistance to downy mildew of all the varieties on the PGRO Descriptive List.

✚ It has a large seed size, which will suit export markets, along with a high protein content.

Breeder: Senova

Tundra

✚ Treated Yield 94%

✚ Tundra has been the most widely grown variety in recent years.

✚ Now superseded by other varieties in terms of yield but Tundra has proven consistency on farm with good all round agronomics.

✚ Tundra has average maturity, similar to Vespa.

✚ Seed size is good and has been suited to export markets.

Spring Bean Varieties

Lynx

Lynx is a consistent variety that has performed well over recent seasons of changeable weather patterns.

A top yielding variety, Lynx also offers the best downy mildew resistance
available and is one of the stiffest strawed varieties in the marketplace,
a combination that is not currently matched by other varieties.

Seed size is slightly smaller than Vertigo and Victus, however other attributes make Lynx a prime candidate for growers to choose.

Breeder: NPZ UK

Genius

✚ A high yielding spring bean, yielding on par with Lynx
with many similar characteristics.

✚ Slightly taller, but the same maturity as Lynx and good disease resistance.

✚ Genius has a larger seed size than Lynx, which makes it desirable to
end users where a large seed size is required.

Pea Varieties

Daytona

A Market Leader

✚ Daytona has been the leading green pea for quality and colour retention for many years.

✚ It has consistently delivered samples of good colour retention across a range of conditions better than other blue pea varieties.

✚ This gives growers the best chance of maximising premiums offered into the human and micronising pet food markets.

✚ Daytona is one of the earlier maturing green peas and has good scores for downy mildew resistance and standing ability.
Breeder: Agrii

Carrington

✚ A high yielding green pea with excellent agronomic traits.
✚ One of the stiffest peas to stand at harvest and excellent downy mildew resistance.

✚ Carrington has a slightly smaller seed size, compared to other varieties.
✚ Good colour retention which will make it a suitable choice for premium end markets.
Breeder: NPZ UK

Kameleon (White Pea)

✚ White peas offer high yields compared to other pea types.

✚ Kameleon is a high yielding white pea that has performed consistently well for several years.

✚ It has a large seed size, making it ideal for the splitting market.

✚ With no particular weaknesses, Kameleon is a sound choice for growers choosing this type of pea.
UK Agent: Senova, UK

Mantara (Maple Pea)

✚ Mantara is a brown seeded maple pea with a wide range of end uses but primarily in the pet/pigeon feed market, due to the unique grain characters.

✚ A short strawed variety with moderate straw stiffness offering moderate to good agronomic characteristics.

✚ Mantara should be grown on a forward contract to maximise returns. GB Seeds can offer more information if required.
Breeder: Limagrain, UK

Sakura (Marrowfat Pea)

✚ Sakura is one of the most widely grown pea varieties, driven by forward contracts.

✚ Sakura performs consistently, has good colour retention and a very large seed size.

✚ It can only be grown on a buy-back contract which ensures defined market security for growers.

✚ Yields can be within 15- 20% of popular green peas (or better), but with attractive premiums for the right sample, this will more than compensate in terms of gross margin.

✚ Standing ability and maturity are relatively good, but disease resistance is poorer than other green or white varieties.
